It's long overdue that we offer our community a good, affordable option to receive on-going technical training throughout the year. Oakland Hackers Club is training, mentoring and professional skill development throughout the year. For those who've paid for any training at the Guild this year, your membership will be discounted to honor what you've already spent. We want you here and we want to build the kind of community that encourages gathering together to BUILD THINGS.
Ever since the Guild opened it's doors, it's been our mission to provide affordable professional training. So far it's been a mix of sponsored (free) training programs and low-cost skill workshops. And while the community has welcomed it, you clearly want and need more from us.
Today, software developers in Oakland can pay an annual fee that gives you access to monthly training workshops throughout the year. It's simple:
1. New members pay $250 each year (monthly option available through Patreon).
2. Each workshop you've already paid for this year counts.
This is phase one. The first Oakland Hackers Club gathering will be in August! Today the membership drive has begun in order to create The First Hackers of Oakland: founding members who will help lead it and ensure the Guild meets member expectations. It's important that the Hackers Club is driven by its members, providing a space for the community itself to select the kinds of events and training they want to see at Programmers Guild. It's all about building this community into something that promotes career and skill development in our city!
I envision the Oakland Hackers Club as a space where software developers can take their craftsmanship to the next level with exciting projects and professional training, while also providing a safe and joyous community to do what we all love to do: CODE, HACK, BUILD! 4. Members-only events: annual hackathons/projects, professional networking, and Happy Hour events.
Eventually we will restore the computer lab so that members have daily access to the Guild workshop. That way you all have a way to gather and work together on projects. Currently, you'll have to schedule a date ahead of time to access the workshop.
All events provided by the Guild include a delicious, healthy lunch! We partner with local health and food organizations like Mandela to feed your body as well as your brain while you train!
As a non-profit, community support goes directly into the best technical training in the Bay. This year, I want to grow the Guild community and bring us all together more often. It seems obvious that people want this because you've been asking for it and searching for a real place to belong as a programmer. The Guild is here for that.
